PRINCIPLE #1: “US-FOCUSED” INTO “THEM-FOCUSED

It is now time to think less of us and more of God. Let us follow the example of our Lord Jesus Christ when He said that He did not come to be served but to serve. He demonstrated selflessness and compassion for others. Let us also desire to manifest these traits in our lives.

According to Dr. Ellison, the absolute best thing you can do when you’re feeling stuck and uninspired is to rededicate yourself to serving others. She believes that over time, we become too focused on our own insecurities and lose sight of the love that should be our primary motivation. “Eight years ago I moved from a little city called Los Angeles to Montgomery, Alabama,” she shared. “Big shift! It was a huge transition, and my prayer became: ‘Lord, help me blossom where I’m planted.’ In helping me, the Lord showed me to serve outwardly. Put the focus on other people. Instead of just looking at what you’re going through, or what’s wrong in your own world, think about how you can empower others.”

Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Sometimes we need to “think small” for a time in order to rediscover our purpose. Stop thinking just about the big picture and think instead about the tangible, everyday ways you can help others. “When people think they don’t have anything to offer the world, that’s rooted in selfishness,” she said. “We’re always thinking ‘Who will listen to me?’ or ‘I’m so stuck.’ We’re so us-focused! Being others-focused will help get us moving again.” Actions as seemingly small-scale as volunteering at a local homeless shelter or writing a letter to a friend who is going through a difficult time can work wonders for your passion.

Hebrews 13:16

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
