Bigger Than You – Part 3

“The following blog post is an excerpt from a new book by Errol Lawson called “The 5 Core Abilities of Highly Effective Leaders”. Errol is a business coach, best-selling author and youth pastor. The book is written primarily for the Christian community but readers from all beliefs can gain great insights from his writings.”

Why have Jon’s books and events resonated so powerfully with so many people? In part, it’s because he offered an understandable message that everyone—regardless of their age or background—could easily relate to some point in their lives.

Matthew 5:14
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Let Jon explain his ministry’s ideology in his own words: “The core message was positivity, choosing to be positive in a world of negativity,” he told me. “Having faith and always moving forward. Not Pollyanna positive, and not the kind of positive thinking we do on our own, but moving forward in the face of adversity and setbacks. It’s really about grit. That’s what moves us forward to ultimately be our best and to bring out the best in others.”

Powerful, right? It’s a succinct yet moving mission statement, universal enough to resonate with a lot of people but specific enough to be unique. It applies to everyone (after all, who couldn’t use a bit more grit in their lives?), but Jon’s focus on love and service gives it a different perspective from the world’s idea of positivity. In sum, Jon said something everyone needs to hear in a way that no one else was saying it.

Romans 10:17
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

And that’s the best way to craft a message that truly inspires a large number of people. As Christian leaders, we don’t want to build a vision that disappears alongside all the other messages out there today. Rather, we should inspire others to study and learn more about God. We should compel them to examine themselves and open themselves up to sacrificing for the Kingdom. By encouraging others to take up our message and pass it on further, we enable it to grow in an exponential fashion.
