Bigger Than You – Part 2

“The following blog post is an excerpt from a new book by Errol Lawson called “The 5 Core Abilities of Highly Effective Leaders”. Errol is a business coach, best-selling author and youth pastor. The book is written primarily for the Christian community but readers from all beliefs can gain great insights from his writings.”

Just because your message is personal doesn’t mean that it should be exclusive to you. A powerful and inspired vision has the ability to grow beyond the limits that we impose upon it. Jon started out small. He began by sending out daily encouragement emails to friends and acquaintances, then moved on to giving free speeches at various venues. From there, he started to write bestselling books. But Jon’s passion always revolved around others rather than himself, and his passion seemed almost bigger than he could contain. “For me,” he said, “it was about speaking everywhere and anywhere to share the message that I had inside of me.”

Exodus 9:16
“But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth”.

In the end, that should be our own measure of success. Our visions should be revolutionary and life-changing enough that we cry out to God for his help in carrying them out. Ask yourself these questions:

  •  In what ways am I challenging the status quo? Am I encouraging others to think in a new way?

  • Am I using my words and actions to combat injustices that I see in the world?

  •  Does my message undermine harmful stereotypes and social norms? Do I help people to see the true potential in themselves and others, especially the potential that society denies them?

“It’s going to be a struggle, it’s going to be a grind,” Jon said. “But if you love others and you invest in them and make them a priority, as you help them grow you will grow. As you serve others, you improve as a leader. Ironically, when we help others we help ourselves. We grow into the leaders that God has called us to be.” Is your vision big enough that you know you could never do it without God’s help?

Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.
